New page

Have you ever wanted to make a clan, get warriors, apprentices, kits, elders, and more? Well, here can show you how!

Steps
Making the Camp, Outdoors
# Finding and collecting the materials. You'll need a lot of different materials for this. Try to determine what you need, by how your clan acts, or, where your clan hunts. Find brambles. Strong, but bendable sticks. Some rocks may also be needed. Try finding some moss too. You may not want too, though, because the moss could make someone's skin break out, so be careful. If not, you could just use green blankets as the nests.
# Began building the camp. Start off by making the walls, to protect your camp. Make an entrance in the middle of the wall, where it leads to the center of camp. You would want the Apprentice and Warriors den by the entrance. The Nursery by the Warriors den. The Medicine Cat den by the Apprentices den. The Elders den by the Medicine Cat den, and the Leaders den in the center, at the back of camp. In the Medicine Cat den, try to make some shelves in the wall for herbs. You could make the HighRock, ShadeRock, TallRock, WetRock, etc. next to the Leaders den. The Dirt-Place can be your bathroom(s).
# Enforce the dens. Try making more layers on the den walls, to make them thicker if another clan attacked. When doing this, make the walls thicker from the outside. If you did it inside, it would cramp it up more.
# Lay down your moss, or green blankets in small spots of the dens. The Nursery needs a few couple, large nests. The Leaders den will only need one, though you may want to make is somewhat large. The Warriors den will need a lot. Make them massive, but spread them out some. The Apprentice den won't need too many, but they need to be medium sized nests. The elders den will only need a few, but try to make them large. The Medicine den will need two by the storage area, then a few more off near the other wall. Try to keep an area at the entrance of the den open, so they can get in without stepping on nests, or cats sleeping.
# Make a Fresh-Kill Pile. Make an area, where you could put jars of food, as Fresh-Kill. This will be the Fresh-Kill Pile. Don't take up half the camp with it, but don't make it too tiny.

Making the Camp, Indoors
# Get the materials to make the camp. If you cannot make the camp outdoors, make it indoors. Start by getting some pillows, or some things to hold up the dens. Try to get some things soft, as stands. Then get some pillows and blankets.
# Make the dens. Get the stands you have, and began lining them up for the den placements. throw some blankets over them, that are green, brown, or grey. Keep an area open for the entrance. If you don't have stands, you could use pillows. Put down the pillows for the nests. The Dirt-Place can be your bathroom(s).
# Make the Fresh-Kill Pile. If you can, make a Fresh-Kill Pile and get some jars of food and place them in the Fresh-Kill Pile. If you aren't allowed to bring food into your room, or wherever your camp is, your kitchen could be the Fresh-Kill Pile.

Making the Clans
# Make your Clan name. You can name your clan anything. Just don't use silly names like BookClan, BlogClan, KittyClan, HumanClan, etc.
# Talk in catspeak. You would call Humans, Two-Legs. Leaf-Bare is Winter, Leaf-Fall is Fall/Autumn, Green-Leaf is Summer, and New-Leaf is Spring. If you want a full list, here: http://www.warriorcats.com/explore/glossary
# Get other people. To start off, you would want a Leader, a Deputy, a Medicine Cat, a few Warriors, a few Apprentices, but a number less than the Warriors, a few Queens, a few Kits, and some Elders if you'd like. Let them pick their prefix, and you can pick the suffix. Just talk with them about it first. You may also have Rogues and Loners. Loners are cats who left the clan, or have no clan. Rogues are cats who were exiled from a clan.
# Make other clans. You can have other clans if you want. You don't have to, but it'd add to the effect. You may have as many clans as you want. You also would need a StarClan, and a Dark Forest. Those clans don't really need camps. If a cat is evil and dies, they would go to the Dark Forest. If a cat is good and dies, they would go to StarClan.
# Make a map of the territories. Have the map have each territory, and special landmarks if there is some.

Began RolePlaying
# Ceremonies. Keep a kit, a kit, for six moons. It doesn't actually have to be six months, but if you really want effect, you could. Then, do the apprentice ceremony, making the kit an apprentice. Assign a mentor that would pass on their skills. The mentor gets to pick when their apprentice is ready to become a warrior. When they become a warrior, you could pick the suffix. If they want to pick their own suffix, they can.
# Battles. You could battle with other clans over the forest, territory, or anything else you want! Just don't make it something stupid. Don't actually hurt each other though, just play fight.
# Gatherings. If you do this at night, and it's a full moon, then you could do a Gathering. Try not to fight at the Gatherings, unless you want drama, and to anger StarClan.
# Exiling. If a cat breaks the warrior code, with proof, then the leader may exile them. That cat then would become a rogue.

Tips
* Don't actually hurt each other when fighting.
* If you don't want to be the leader when you make the clan, let the medicine cat get a sign from StarClan to pick who is the leader.
* If a she wants to have kits, get some more people, or get people to double role as her kits. The she may also have a 'mate' who would be a tom. But do not get in trouble from doing anything bad.

Warnings
* If someone starts picking on you for this, just ignore them.
* Be careful out in the forest, if you pick to do an outdoors one. If you're too young, have an adult with you.

#*Practice balance first. While this comes with practicing kicks overtime, you can do additional exercises to practice if this area needs the most improvement. Practice standing on one leg for an extended period of time and finding your center of balance. Switch legs! Once you have this down, try hopping on one leg across a room. Switch legs! You may find that it is easier for you to do this on one leg versus another - but the other leg has just as much potential. Be sure to always practice both legs - who knows, your weaker leg may end up being your stronger leg!

#*Then work on kicks. The traditional kicks exhibited in Poomsae require a full range of motion. While the kicks and actual movements may be different, the process is the same. First, bring your knee all the way into your chest. When you kick, make sure that your leg is extended all the way in a straight line (if this is a sidekick, make sure your back is a continuation of this line, in most instances you need to arch your back further back to get that line). Similar to the hand movements, you should stick the kick at the end of the extension. After sticking your kick, bring your leg all the way back into your chest. Then bring your leg down the the floor in a controlled manner.

#Work on your flexibility. Flexibility helps a lot in patterns (hence all the suggested stretching!). This is when you will have to be able to do the splits, all three ways. Meaning you must stretch everyday! If you're naturally flexible, you're making people jealous. But that doesn't mean you still don't need practice.

#Work on the height of your kicks. When you are doing patterns, the height of your kick counts. If you kick around your nose and you forehead, that's pretty good. But if you want to blow your master away, kick above you head. The higher the better. This is a combination of flexibility and balance. To work on this type of balance, you can practice your kicks by holding onto something first. You can also practice by kicking up/along a wall while holding onto someone or something. It will take a lot of practice to build strength to get these kicks exactly right, and a lot of practice in general!

#Once you get all the basic movements down, put them all together! First go through each movement: stance, hand movement, and any kicks. Stop after each movement to make sure that everything is still accurate. Feel free to start slow until you get the combination of all the movements correctly while maintaining proper form. Then show power in your hand movements, in your stance, and in your face - focus! Even with the power added, the movements should remain consistent: you should not lose balance, stance, or any detail.

#After that, add intensity. Intensity is harder to describe, but it's the effort you show in each movement, and in your face, as you go through your form. You can also show this with yelling "kihap" extra loud at the appropriate parts of the form.

#Memorize patterns. Be diligent while committing to practicing forms. Your goal should to be to continually improve, step by step. Set aside time every day to stretch, do drills to improve areas you need work on, practice, and review your progress. Make sure you get every movement exactly right, but don't be discouraged if you do not, just try it again!

#*Patterns can be harder than sparring. This is because you only have one shot in winning a poomsae competition. One shot to make everything exactly right. In sparring, if they kick you, or if you kick them, a point is gained. Memorizing patterns is important. If you forget a pattern halfway, you cannot win. To take it a step further and commit your physical memory to getting every movement right is even more difficult! But if you believe in yourself it can be done!

Replacing page with 'Turnip for what?'

←Older revision Revision as of 08:49, 27 September 2016
Line 1: Line 1:
Turnips are a relatively low maintenance crop that can usually be harvested after five to ten weeks, and you can harvest both the root of the vegetable and its greens. Start from seed and plan on growing your turnips in the spring or fall.
+
Turnip for what?

+

+

+
Steps
+
Part One: Planting
+
#Plant in the spring or fall. Turnips thrive in cooler temperatures, so you should plant them when soil temperatures are still somewhat cool. For spring turnips, sow the seeds outdoors three weeks before the last expected frost. For fall turnips, sow the seeds in midsummer, roughly two months before the first expected frost of winter.
+
#*The soil temperature needs to be an average of at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) for the seeds to germinate, but temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees (10 and 21 degrees Celsius) Fahrenheit encourage the most rapid growth.
+
#*Fall turnips are typically sweeter than spring turnips, and they are also less likely to attract root maggots.
+
#Choose a good location. Turnips thrive in full sun, so the area you choose should receive at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, if not a little more.
+
#*Ideally, you should also choose a spot with naturally loose, well-draining soil. You can improve the soil conditions if necessary, but starting out with good soil conditions will make your job easier.
+
#*Also keep in mind that turnips prefer soils with a pH of 6.5. Most soils will not be too acidic or too alkaline, so testing is not always necessary. If you have difficulty with your turnip crop, though, consider testing the soil pH by taking a sample to your nearest university or by purchasing a home pH testing kit from a garden nursery or home improvement store.
+
#Improve the soil conditions. Loosen the soil with a rake or shovel to a depth of 12 to 15 inches (30 to 38 cm), then mix in a 2-inch to 4-inch (5-cm to 10-cm) layer of compost.
+
#*For added benefit, consider mixing in a few handfuls of well rotted manure along with the compost.
+
#Scatter the seeds. Spread the seed across the prepared soil as evenly as possible. Cover the seed gently with 1/4 inch (6 mm) of soil for spring turnips or 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) of soil for fall turnips.
+
#*Alternatively, you can plant the seeds in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) apart.
+
#*Note that germination usually takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days.
+
#*After planting the seeds, make sure that they are evenly watered. You do not want to drench the seeds since doing so can wash them out of the soil, but the surface of the soil should be somewhat moist to the touch.
+
#Thin out the seedlings. When the seedlings reach a height of 4 inches (10 cm), pull the weakest ones so that the strongest have more room and resources. "Early" varieties should be thinned out so that they are 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) apart, while standard or "maincrop" varieties should be 6 inches (15 cm) apart.
+
#*If you only want to grow turnips for their greens, however, you should not thin them out.
+
#*Usually, the greens of the removed plants are large enough to use.
+
Part Two: General Care
+
#Water as needed. Turnips need 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water per week. Any less will cause the roots to become tough and bitter, but too much more can cause the turnips to rot.
+
#*Monitor the rainfall in your area. During seasons of average rainfall, you may not need to do any additional watering. If the season is a dry one, though, you should water the turnips by hand.
+
#Add plenty of mulch. When the plants reach a height of 5 inches (12.7 cm), add a 2-inch (5-cm) layer of mulch around the greens.
+
#*Mulch holds in moisture, and even moisture can encourage better growth and flavor.
+
#*Additionally, mulch can help control and limit the number of weeds in your garden.
+
#Consider fertilizing the turnips. While not strictly necessary, a monthly application of mild, organic fertilizer can help strengthen the turnip root. Choose a fertilizer high in potassium and phosphorus rather than one high in nitrogen.
+
#*Nitrogen fertilizers will cause the turnip greens to get very bushy, but the roots will suffer as a result.
+
#*Look for fertilizers that also contain boron or apply a separate boron spray four to six weeks after sowing the seeds.
+
#*Make sure that any fertilizer you use is food-safe.
+
#*Instead of a fertilizer, you could apply a dose of compost tea once a month or so.
+
#Remove any weeds. Any weeds that poke their way up through the mulch should be pulled by hand. Avoid using herbicides since the chemicals can get on the turnip plant, damaging it and making it unfit for human consumption.
+
#Watch out for pests and fungi. Root maggots and flea beetles are among the most common pests you'll need to worry about, while powdery mildew and downy mildew tend to be the most common forms of fungi.
+
#*Root maggots are most often a problem when you grow turnips in soil that nurtured radishes, turnips, or rutabagas the previous year. To prevent root maggot infestations, rotate your crops and treat the soil with a food-safe insecticide labeled for use against root maggots.
+
#*Keeping the soil pH above 6.0 can prevent most problems with mildew and other fungi, like club root. Periodically test the soil pH with a pH testing kit or by taking it to a local university extension office.
+
#*Typically speaking, once turnip roots become infested by pests or fungi, there is not much you can do to save them. Your best option is to remove the infected plant and treat the soil as needed to destroy as much of the pest or fungi as possible. You may or may not be able to recover the rest of your turnip crop.
+
Part Three: Harvesting
+
#Harvest the greens early on. As a general rule, you can harvest greens as soon as they are large enough to pick. Generally, this is when the green reach a height between 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm).
+
#*As long as the growing points or nodes are not removed, the greens should regrow after harvesting them.
+
#*If you want to harvest leaves and roots from the same plant, only remove two or three leaves per plant. If you remove all of the leaves, the root will die.
+
#Pull turnips roots once they mature. You should be able to harvest mature, ripe turnips after five to ten weeks. "Early" varieties only require five weeks, while main crop varieties need six to ten.
+
#*You can harvest small turnips simply by hand pulling them. To harvest large turnip roots, use a spading fork to loosen the soil around the root before pulling it out.
+
#*You can harvest turnips at virtually any size. Small turnips are tender and tend to be somewhat sweeter than large turnips, though, so most prefer to harvest turnips when the roots are between 1 and 3 inches (2.5 and 7.5 cm) in diameter).
+
#*You can check the root size by lightly brushing away soil on top of one plant to reveal the root below. If that one plant appears ready for harvest, most of the others will likely be ready, as well.
+
#*Make sure that all of your turnips are harvested before the first frost. Do not allow them to grow too large, since overripe turnips have a woody taste and texture.
+
#Store in cool temperatures. When packed and stored in a cool place, harvested turnips will usually last for three to four months. Consider keeping them in a basement, root cellar, or shed and covering them with straw.
+
#*Twist off the tops, leaving 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) of stem before storing the turnips. Do not rinse off any soil since it can actually help protect the roots wile they remain in storage.
+
#*You might be able to leave your fall crop in the ground until early winter by covering them with a thick mulch, but pull them out before the soil freezes and hardens.
+
#*Turnips can also be stored in the refrigerator.
+

+

* You can import financial information from other programs, most easily Microsoft Excel. However, if you already have your details entered into a program, it's usually simpler to take advantage of the graphing functions in that program rather than moving the data over to a word processor.

* These directions are for using Microsoft Word, the most commonly used word processing program in the United States and Europe. You can also use spreadsheet and financial software to create a money graph. The processes for using those vary more widely, but are usually simple to access. Creating graphs is part of the primary functionality of that kind of program.

*Despite misconceptions, washing your dreadlocks is actually good for them. Not only will shampooing dreadlocks keep them clean, it also removes oil from your hair, which can help it knot tighter.

*Dreadlocks can be safely washed a couple of times per week, but be careful not to wash them too often. The chemicals in shampoo along with the friction of scrubbing might eventually cause them to come loose.

Do not use if you are pregnant or under-age (this age is usually 16 in Europe and 18 in Australia,  18 or 19 in Canada and 18 in NZ, UK and the USA.).  It also makes your hands and teeth yellow with nicotine and creates wrinkles and lines around your lips from sucking on the cigarette.

*If your parents are nonsmokers, they will be able to smell your smoke eventually, no matter how hard you try to clean yourself and your belongings.  Even if you can't smell it, they can.  This is because people who don't smoke have healthier, more sensitive noses. And super-sniffers will smell it straight away - if you have such a parent, you'll know it already!

*The cologne trick doesn't always work. If you spray too much, they may think you're getting high off of Axe or whatever substance you use to cover up the smell. Parents with good noses (especially ex-smokers themselves) will be able to smell through it. Scrape your tongue with your teeth to eliminate the odor, and make sure they know a couple of your friends smoke. This way, you can always pull the old, "Oh, yeah, I was hanging out with so-and-so. It's so disgusting, isn't it?" when they ask you why you smell like an ashtray. Also, you can say something like "Oh, Cool!" to be funny. If you are joking around and show you are not nervous they will be less suspicious.

* Those who have lived in temperate climates are used to mosquitos, but remember, in the tropics they are the most deadly animal you will face. Use anything you can to prevent them: spray your body with bug spray (Warning: Handle DEET and permethrin with extreme caution. They are flammable and poisonous in large amounts). Some plants may have bug-repelling properties as well. Fishing nets can be re-purposed for mosquito nets. As often as possible, especially if none of these procedures can be performed, stay on the coast.
